The Nellis base library offers complete, modern library services and resources to the entire Nellis community to support education, career development and profitable use of leisure time. This library contains assorted fiction and non-fiction books, periodicals and audio recordings, as well as a large collection of educational and recreational videos.

The library also provides computer workstations with Internet access, MS Office applications, and printing capabilities; copy and fax services, books-on-tape, and a microfiche reader/printer. Other services include paperback exchange and volunteer programs.

The Nellis library is part of an online computer network with all major Southern Nevada libraries with access to several state-of-the-art computer database research systems. The library conducts a children's summer reading program June through August, preschool story hours throughout the year, computer classes and tours for interested groups.

Library Cards
Library cards are issued to all active duty and retired military, civilian personnel, and their families upon the presentation of an official military or government identification card. TDY personnel and reservists may be asked to show a copy of their orders.

Cards obtained at the Nellis AFB Library may be used at any of the libraries in Clark County. Cards issued to Nellis personnel by other Clark County libraries may be used at the Nellis AFB Library. A borrower may be registered as "unverified" when necessary information is missing from the registration, for example a duty telephone number or complete squadron information such as an office symbol.

Sponsors/parents are responsible for their dependent children's use of the library regardless of age, and must personally sign the registration form for all children under thirteen years of age. All accounts at either LVCCLD or the Base Library MUST be cleared/settled to have the library complete the USAF Virtual Out-Processing procedures. A service member must contact the library if there are any outstanding fines or questions.

Maximum Number of Items Allowed

  • Twenty-five (25) items total
  • Four (4) entertainment VHS tapes and/or DVDs within the total of 25
  • This limit is for all borrowers regardless of the issuing library district's limit
  • An unverified borrower may check out only two (2) items

Loan Periods

  • Entertainment VHS tapes and DVDs - one (1) week.
  • Educational and instructional VHS tapes and DVDs - two (2) weeks.
  • All other items - three (3) weeks.

Renewals

Materials belonging to the Base Library may be renewed at the library or by telephone, provided the item is not on hold for another patron. You may be asked to return items being requested by other patrons. Materials may be renewed twice, for a total of nine (9) weeks, before they have to be returned.

The Nellis AFB Library may not renew materials owned by other libraries in Clark County. If this occurs, the borrowers must contact these libraries directly to request renewals.

Overdue Charges

As long as Nellis AFB Library materials are returned to the library, no overdue charges will be assessed.

NOTE: Other libraries in Clark County, however, do charge fines. If you have overdue materials from these libraries, Nellis AFB Library does not have the authority to waive these fines. These fines may be paid on base using either a personal check or money order only. [No cash accepted.] Keep in mind that materials requested through our online catalog are provided to you based on the policies of the lending library.

Delinquent Policy

An account is considered delinquent and no further materials may be borrowed or requested when a patron owes $4 or more in fines or charges for lost materials. This includes fines or charges at the base library or at LVCCLD.

Please note that the Base Library can collect fines and fees for other libraries, but can only accept a personal check or money order [No Cash]. If you want to pay cash or need assistance from LVCCLD, the library staff will direct you to the nearest library in order to settle your account if this becomes necessary.

Lost Materials

Lost materials will be paid for or replaced with a new copy of the lost material or a suitable substitute approved by the librarian. A standard fee will be charged for lost periodicals.

Notices

As a courtesy reminder, the library will mail an overdue notice listing all materials not returned ten days after the due date.

A second notice will be sent twenty days after the due date.

The third and final notice is generated thirty days after the due date and is a collection notice.

If the material is not returned or the patron's account is not cleared, the library will notify the patron's organization commander and take steps to secure payment for the lost material.

Computer Lab

The Computer Lab is provided for the convenience of authorized patrons of the Nellis Air Force Base Library. Popular services include the ability to use the Microsoft Office suite of applications and access to the Internet. We also offer free access and use of online databases such as EBSCO Auto Repair Reference Center, Gale Group's Online Resources, Janes Online, and NewsBank.

Authorized Users

The Lab is available to authorized users of the Base Library age 16 and older. Children under 16 may use the Lab only if a parent is present in the library at all times. Authorized patrons may sponsor guests with a visitors pass but must remain in the library while the guest uses the Lab. Sponsors are responsible for any damage done by themselves, their dependents or their guests to any of the computer equipment, programs and printers. Computers in the Kid's section are available for preteens. Children under the age of twelve must be under the supervision of a responsible adult in the library who will be available to assist and monitor the child's use of the computer as needed.

Procedures

Patrons must sign up at the Computer Help Desk or Circulation Desk to use the Computer Lab. Appropriate ID must be shown. A workstation will be assigned and a workstation card issued. Time blocks of one hour are allocated. Extensions are automatic if there is no waiting list. Once assigned to a computer, please stay with that computer. If a change of computer is necessary, advise the staff of your needs. When finished, please logoff and return the workstation card.

General

Anyone using the Lab must be able to read and understand the Computer Lab Policies. Unauthorized use of computers will result in termination of the session and will be reported to the appropriate authorities. Reoccurrence of related problems will result in denial of further access to the Lab. Report any problems to the Computer Systems Administrator, or other staff member, if the former is unavailable. Do not attempt to correct them yourself.

You are expected to be knowledgeable about computer use. Library staff may be able to provide you with limited technical expertise on some applications, but are not resource personnel for computer programs or websites. Selected on-screen tutorials are available.

Restrictions

All international, federal, state and local laws, as well as Air Force rules and directives, apply to the use of computer lab resources including access to the Internet. It is unlawful to change any settings on any computer, monitor or printer in the Computer Lab.

Copyright Law (Title 17, United States Code) prohibits copying of Library installed software. Only library electronic resources may be used on Lab computers; patrons may not load any software programs to the hard disk drive. For those patrons who must have access to their own programs, we have one non-Internet computer dedicated for that purpose. All programs installed on it by the patron must be uninstalled before leaving.

Downloading anything from the Internet to the hard disk drive is prohibited. No Exceptions. This includes, but not limited to, such things as applications, files, pictures, plugins, etc. You may save newly created files to the Personal folder on the desktop but you may not copy existing files from a floppy disk or other source to the hard disk drive. The hard disk drive is purged periodically, so you will need to save your personal files to a floppy disk for future access.

Chat or messenger service that is web-based may be used. Any chat system, messenger service or anything else that requires downloading is prohibited. Patrons may not use live chat, messenger services or play games when there is a waiting list to use the computer lab.

Food and drinks are prohibited in the computer lab. Containers may be left on the Computer Help Desk.

Printing Services

Please do not alter printer settings. Let the application program control the printer when printing documents. Do not open any printer doors/drawers for any reason. Ask the staff for help. Exercise discretion when using Lab printers. Print only one copy and no more than 25 pages per person per day. If multiple copies of a document are needed, we have a coin operated photocopier available for your use. Excessive printing may affect our ability to offer this service at no cost to our patrons.

Viruses

A virus scan program has been installed on each computer. If a virus is detected, please notify library personnel immediately. The library is not responsible for the loss of data resulting from the use of library computers or the software installed on them
