The Nellis Honor Guard is an elite group of
professionals, who exemplify the traditions of the United States Air Force. The Honor Guards main mission is to provide military funeral honors for active duty members, retirees and veterans. They also provide Color Guard support for many on and off-base events. For those
who require a funeral with military honors, 48 hours advance notice is preferred. For civic events that require Color Guard support, 30-60 day advance notice is preferred. For off-base events, please contact Nellis
Public Affairs at (702)-652-2750.
History
The Honor Guard traces its beginning to May 1948 when
Headquarters Command United States Air Force was instructed to develop plans for an elite ceremonial unit comparable to those of the other armed services.
As a result, a ceremonial unit was activated within the Air Police Squadron in September 1948, with an authorized strength of 98 enlisted and two officers. However, due to transfers and personnel attrition, the end of the year found the Ceremonial Detachment, for all practical purposes, disbanded. It wasn't until March 1949 that sufficient personnel were assigned to enable the unit to function. The Ceremonial Detachment continued to be assigned to the Air Police Squadron until December 1971. Finally on January 1 1972, the Honor Guard came into its own as a separate unit.
The members of the Nellis Honor Guard play an essential role in providing military honors to our veterans. They are trained in every aspect of ceremonies, customs and courtesies to be the elite
professionals worthy of representing the active duty members of Nellis Air Force Base. Through their daily performance in military funerals, Color Guards and various community activities, these young men and women make a positive and consistent contribution to Nellis AFB and the local
community. |
